West coast food life

Autumn 08

Resident writer-chef Sophie Zalokar reports.

Long associated with magnificent karri forests and nature-based tourism, Pemberton’s central location within the south west offering a food-bowl of produce and delicious cool-climate wines, demands much more attention than a passing stop over. Discover what the locals have known for a long time...

After Moss Wood winery’s founder Dr Bill Pannell’s initial involvement with the Smithbrook vineyard, the Pannell family extensively researched and established the Picardy vineyard in 1993. Underpinning their success with wine has always been stringent viticulture practices together with extraordinary attention to winemaking detail and for the vineyards of Picardy, Burgundian clones of pinot noir and chardonnay. Uncompromising in the French-style, barrel tasting can be experienced by appointment only in the French-style, barrel tasting can be experienced by appointment only in their specially designed barrel room.

...Linking the Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions, Pemberton offers a stunning corridor of awe-inspiring forests, pristine waterways and tributaries, lush vineyards producing delicious wines, pastures and laden orchard, galleries and the wonderful southern Forest Sculpture Walk in nearby Northcliffe. An endearingly bucolic region to be protected, preserved for its beauty and bounty and experienced many times over.
